Mirna's innovation focuses on developing a molecular-based solution for the simultaneous sequencing of genetic and epigenetic markers that are forensically relevant. This approach leverages massively parallel sequencing technologies within a single workflow and enzymatic conversion, enhancing the precision of biological evidence analysis in complex forensic cases, such as sexual assault. By sequencing short tandem repeats alongside DNA methylation markers, it allows for both individual identification, body fluid identification and age prediction from a single sample. This integrated solution reduces sample consumption and processing time, improving efficiency in forensic investigations. The development of hybridization capture assays further ensures the integration of this methodology into forensic workflows, offering crime laboratories an advanced, reliable tool for more accurate and timely forensic analysis.

This innovative solution is being developed to enhance forensic casework, particularly in solving complex cases involving mixed or degraded samples.

She aims to further validate these methods for routine use in crime laboratories while expanding their applications in other forensic disciplines, such as disaster victim identification.
