Asmaa sought to enhance conventional water filter performance by incorporating an active layer of covalent-organic frameworks (COFs). The pivotal aspect was the ability to engineer COFs into efficient adsorbents tailored to specific contaminants.
A conventional filter comprises several layers of adsorbents, where each one is added to remove a specific class of pollutants from water. However, these adsorbents are inefficient in removing emerging contaminants such as PFAS and pharmaceuticals. The innovative COF filter proposed will feature additional active layers of COFs that we specifically designed to remove emerging contaminants.
Unlike specialized filters targeting only emerging contaminants, Asmaa’s approach ensures a comprehensive solution, avoiding competition with conventional filters vital for removing standard pollutants. It’s a holistic strategy, balancing efficiency and adaptability across diverse water treatment needs.
